Gates Mills Police Department

Proud to Serve…Sworn to Protect

From Your Police Department:

As the summer is winding down and children are heading back to school, I want to remind everyone to closely monitor your speed when driving through our schools zones. The beginning of the school year is the time when children are at an increased risk for pedestrian, and motor vehicle related accidents.  Thank you for your help in keeping the Village roadways safe.

We have received numerous reports from residents about “spoofing”.  Spoofing is the act of deliberately falsifying the information transmitted to the caller ID display on your phone to disguise the true identity of the caller.  Many residents have reported calls from telephone numbers beginning with 440-423 prefixes.  These are fraudulent calls and we encourage you to not respond to them by ignoring the call.

If you receive calls that you believe to be of the scam variety (IRS government scams, debt collection, or grandparent scams) please take the time to contact the Cuyahoga County Department of Consumer Affairs at www.consumeraffairs.cuyahogacounty.us or 216-443-7035. Their mission is to alert county residents about scams. To do that, they need to know when scam callers change up their pitches or methods in order to get the word out to the community.

We have started a MeetUp Spots program to give residents a secure transaction/exchange site when buying or selling items from unknown persons via Craigslist, E-Bay, etc.  We have two designated areas. One is inside the lobby at the Town Hall, and the other is in the rear of the service department near the tennis courts.  Green aluminum signs have been placed at the sites to mark each location and both locations are under 24-hour video surveillance.

On Thursday, September 14th, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the Community House, we invite residents to attend our 911 Cellular Safety App presentation for smart phones users.  This free cellular app has many features that will enhance communication and safety. We encourage all to attend.

Until next month – Proud to serve…Sworn to Protect

Yours in Service,
