Gates Mills Police Department

Proud to Serve…Sworn to Protect

From Your Police Department:

With the warmer weather upon us, we can expect to see an increase in bicyclists riding through our beautiful scenic village.

Effective March 21, 2017, Ohio legislators passed House Bill 154, which requires motorists to pass bicyclists on the road with no less than a 3-foot distance.  Ohio is now the 40th state to enact some sort of safe-passing law, and the 28th to mandate a specific distance between the cyclist and passing motorist. We encourage that as you are attempting to pass a bicyclist or a group of bicyclists be patient especially when you are approaching a curve or a hill on the roadway.  Please remember that bicyclists do have a right to the roadway and exercise caution while passing.

Beginning this summer, the police department will be starting a small bicycle unit.  Ptl. Eric Kimball has led the project and was responsible for selecting the appropriate mountain bicycle to suit our needs.  The bicycle will be used for participation in our community wide events and also for residential patrol.  We believe this is an effective and progressive tool which will enable our officers to interact with our residents and the bicycle community in a more approachable and personal level.

We have begun using our portable speed awareness radar sign that we move around to various locations to assist us in our ongoing challenge to control speeding violators in our village. The radar sign continues to be an effective resource for us.  Please contact Ptl. Arch Kimbrew or Ptl. Dylan Hustosky at the town hall 423-4405 or via their email addresses which can be accessed through our web page if you would like request placement of the unit on your street.

Until next month – Proud to serve…Sworn to Protect
